A Smart Fit for the Way We Live Here
Dallas homes come with their own set of realities. The sun hits hard for most of the year, west-facing rooms can be nearly unusable in the afternoon without the right window coverings, and a lot of the newer builds in areas like Frisco, Prosper, and Southlake feature dramatic two-story windows and open floor plans that look stunning but are genuinely difficult to manage manually.
Motorized shades solve that problem in a way that cords and wands simply can't. A motor inside the shade headrail connects to either a hardwired power source or a rechargeable battery system, and from there you can control every shade in your home from your phone, a wall remote, or a scheduled automation. No reaching, no climbing, no cords left in the wrong position. For Dallas homeowners who spend a lot of time managing sunlight, privacy, and energy costs, motorization isn't a luxury upgrade so much as a genuinely practical one.
Motorized Shades FAQs
How long do rechargeable shade batteries last & how often do they need charging?
Rechargeable battery life can be anywhere between 1- 2 years before needing recharging. It will depend on the daily usage of the shade. The life span of a motor is warrantied for 5 years from the date of purchase of the shade.
Can motorized shades be controlled with Alexa, Google Home, or Siri or integrated into a whole-home automation system?
Yes, the shades can be integrated into home system with the Gateway Pro for the Hunter Douglas shades and the Bond Pro for any Somfy & Standard Motors.
Can motorized shades be installed on existing windows without wiring?
Yes, you don’t have to hardwire your shades to get motorization. We have internal & external rechargeable battery systems that will work on existing windows that don’t have any wiring pulled.
I don't have electrical wiring near the windows where I want motorized shades. Is that going to be a problem?
Not at all. Hardwiring is one option, but most of our clients go with battery-powered motors instead, and the performance is the same. We offer both internal battery systems that sit discreetly inside the shade headrail and external battery wands that attach to the side. Either way, you get full motorization without running a single wire. Recharging is simple and only needs to happen once every one to two years depending on how often you use the shades.
What about windows that are two stories up or in hard-to-reach places? How do those get operated and serviced?
This is actually one of the best use cases for motorization. Windows above a staircase, in a vaulted great room, or high up in an entryway are genuinely difficult to reach manually, and many homeowners just leave those shades in one position indefinitely. With motorization, you control them from wherever you’re standing, no ladder required. If a motor ever needs servicing, our installation team can handle it without disrupting the rest of your window treatments.
Can I control motorized shades room by room, or does everything have to move together?
You have full flexibility. Shades can be grouped by room, by floor, by sun exposure, or controlled individually, all from the same app or remote. If you want the bedroom shades to close at 9pm every night while the living room shades stay on a different schedule entirely, the system handles that without any issue.
Do motorized shades work if my internet or power goes out?
Battery-powered shades will continue to operate normally during a power outage since they don’t rely on your home’s electrical system. For shades on a hardwired system, a power outage will interrupt operation, but the shades stay in whatever position they were in when power went out. Most of our clients with hardwired systems pair them with a physical remote as a backup. As for internet outages, you can still operate the shades manually via remote or wall switch even when your Wi-Fi is down.
Will motorized shades work with my existing smart home setup?
Yes. Hunter Douglas PowerView integrates with Alexa, Google Home, Siri, Crestron, and other whole-home automation platforms. For shades running on Somfy or standard motors, the Bond Pro handles the integration. If you already have a smart home system in place, we can typically fold the shades into what you already use rather than adding another app to manage.
