Available Window Treatment Fabrics
Window treatments come in a wide variety of fabrics, and many of our Dallas-area customers have questions about the best choice for their needs. They often ask for information about sheer or opaque materials, and how to choose the best one for their new window coverings. As your local Hunter Douglas dealer, we can help you make the best selection.
First decide what exactly you want your window treatment to do. Do you want it to block harmful UV rays, filter out the sunlight, or provide privacy? Will you want to rotate the blind or shade for light control or lift or have the blind or shade off the window for complete view?
On the following scale of 1 to 4, Hunter Douglas window treatments are rated for how they measure privacy and light control.
- Sheer – This is perfect for living and dining rooms. Light can come into the room, while the fabric also provides you with a view outside. It also reduces the glare—but don’t expect it to provide privacy. Check out Hunter Douglas Silhouette® Window Shadings or Hunter Douglas Luminette® Privacy Sheers for popular examples.
- Semi-Sheer – This is perfect for your kitchen or family room. You’ll get a soft screened view that diffuses light—you’ll also get moderate privacy. Popular semi-sheer window treatments are Hunter Douglas Designer Roman Shades and Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Shades.
- Semi-Opaque – This is perfect for bathrooms and bedrooms. It blocks the view while filtering more light. These fabrics provide more privacy, but you will still be able to see shadows. Look at Hunter Douglas Duette® Honeycomb Shades or Pirouette® Window Shadings for examples.
- Opaque/Room Darkening – This fabric is perfect for bedrooms and children’s rooms. The material blocks almost all light and provides a greater degree of privacy. Popular room-darkening window treatments are Hunter Douglas Custom Shutters and Hunter Douglas Pirouette® Window Shadings.
Blackout Shades
These shades block 99% of all light. They are perfect for bedrooms, children’s rooms, and media rooms. Blackout choices include Duette® Honeycomb Shades and Hunter Douglas Provenance® Woven Woods with liner. Remember, to achieve total room darkness, you should either mount your window treatment on the outside of the window or add drapery panels.
Choosing the Right Shades
Many Hunter Douglas product categories have selections available in all privacy levels. So as you think about the window treatments you want, consider how you want to control the light and privacy in the room. This will help you select the proper window treatment and fabric to meet your needs.
