Quick Holiday Decorating Tips from Ross Howard Designs
The holidays are a perfect time to bring new and fresh interior decorating ideas into your home. Here are some quick ideas to bring the holidays home this season:
Theme. The key to making your holiday decorations charming and stylish is to make a plan and create a theme ahead of time. Think about your color scheme and how your theme will work from room to room. Be creative, and let your imagination run wild as you think about possible themes such as Toyland, Rustic Christmas, Country Christmas, Modern Christmas, Santa, Snowflakes – the possibilities are endless!
Windows. Highlight your windows and accent your window fashions by painting holiday decorations on your windows as part of your holiday decorating. Purchase holiday themed sponge shapes at a craft store, and paint stars, snowflakes, snowmen, trees and more onto your windows. Add a teaspoon of liquid dish soap to acrylic craft paint to make clean-up easy when the season ends.
Artwork. Use your framed artwork as built-in holiday decorations. Either drape them with ribbon, or go all out and wrap them in stylish, high quality wrapping paper that matches your theme. You don’t have to do this with every piece of art, but select them carefully and in a pattern. For example, do all pieces that can be seen from your front window, or focus just on the dining room, entryway, or the room with your tree.
Mantle. Using fishing line, tack up large Christmas ornaments or sparkly snowflakes at varying lengths above your mantle. This will draw attention to your mantel decorations and create a more festive atmosphere.
Go green. Take a walk outside for natural decorating options. Natural evergreen boughs strategically placed as part of other decorations. Other eco-friendly holiday decorating ideas include bowls of fruit, nuts, or pine cones and handmade ornaments. Seasonal plants such as poinsettias and cyclamen create a warm traditional atmosphere and aren’t made with petroleum or chemicals.
Ribbon. Use ribbons and bows throughout your home, such as on lamps, light fixtures, bookshelves and more. This subtle decorating strategy can help you bring your Christmas decorating theme into each room without extravagant decorations or much additional cost.
Toys. Place toys your children or grandchildren have outgrown, such as colorful wooden blocks, train sets, or stuffed animals under the tree to emulate that Christmas-morning excitement in the weeks leading up to Christmas day.
Shutters. Don’t forget your exterior shutters when decorating outside. Trim jumbo-sized gift bags to the size of your shutters, and tape on some waterproof ribbons or bows to make your shutters look like giant gifts. Extra large waterproof stockings hung from shutters are another unique way to create and inviting and festive look outside your home.
