Establishing a Focal Point (or Points!) in the Room
When you walk into a room, your eye is drawn to a certain area in the room. A room can have several focal points. Many rooms have a piano, a window with a view, a fireplace, a TV and lots of artwork. The focal point in a room is defined by how the furnishings are arranged around it. If it is the window, the furniture should be placed around it, so it becomes the magnet in the space. At Ross Howard Designs in Dallas, we’ll be happy to help you make your window the focal point in the room.
General Rules About Decorating Windows
- Think about your view—is it attractive, or does it need to be played down? If it’s attractive, you’ve already got a highlight. If not, think about adding some exterior interest like outdoor lighting or a sculpture.
- Treat your window as a function first, by considering who will operate it, which sides the pulls should be on, and whether your window covering will complement the style you might have on another window. Also think about child and pet safety. Cordless and motorized blinds and shades are available on virtually every window treatment in the Hunter Douglas product offering. Ross Howard Designs and Hunter Douglas take child and pet safety very seriously.
- Decide whether you need horizontal or vertical treatments. Some of the Hunter Douglas horizontal products include Duette® Architella® Honeycomb Shades, Solera® Soft Shades, and Provenance® Woven Woods. Vertical products are perfect for large windows and patio or sliding doors. Some of the vertical products from Hunter Douglas include Duette® Vertiglide™ Honeycomb Shades, Skyline® Gliding Panels, and Vignette® Modern Shades.
- Window treatments will advance or recede into a room through color, texture, and print. Timeless colors and textures on a window will add a soft addition to any room. Draperies or top treatments that carry the same color on the walls will recede into the room. Paint is our most economical element of design. Using neutral colors and soft textures will be easier to keep if your colors and décor change.
