Decorating or Redecorating a Room – Here are Some Tips to Consider
Make Your Room Decorating, Redecorating Task More Enjoyable With These Tips
It can be daunting to start a decorating project, especially given the number of choices and the amount of information out there. From home décor magazines to online ideas sites like Pinterest, the input is astounding. Not to mention that there are many components to decorating, including color schemes and types, furniture, and, of course, window treatments. At Ross Howard Designs here in Dallas, we’re happy to help you sort through the options to get your decorating plan on track. To start, here are a few steps to follow:
- Define how the room is going to be used, and determine a main focal point for the space. Your focal point might be the fireplace or the window or the TV—whatever you want the eye to be drawn to. Measure and map out the room’s dimensions on graph paper, with one square equaling one foot of length. Note where the walls, windows, and doors are and make a mark for where that focal point will be. Then cut out proportionate furniture pieces from graph paper and arrange it on your room map, grouping it around the focal point. Be creative and put sofas on an angle. Remember, all the furniture does not have to be against the wall, especially in rectangular rooms.
- Decide whether and where you want color. You might want to paint or wallpaper your wall. Or, if your room’s focal point is the window, you might consider putting color there—after all, the eye is draw to color, so that would make the window the automatic target. Keep in mind these guidelines: If your window treatments are neutral, you can change the color of paint easier and for far less money than changing the window treatments. Also remember that, when light comes through a colored window treatment, it will affect the colors of all objects in the room.
- Think about the type of window treatment you want. It might be honeycomb shades, vertical blinds, shutters, sheers, or Roman shades. Next think about whether you’d like to add drapery panels or a valance to your window treatment. The addition of draperies or top treatments can soften a room and/or add a splash of color tie the room together.
- Consider the lighting in the room, during different times of day and at night. When lighting will be artificial, be aware of how different LED bulbs will impact colors in the room. If you are using black-based colors such as purple, indigo, blue, teal, or green, you might want to try the LED cool light bulbs. For brown-based colors such as orange, red-orange, red, and magenta, use the LED warm light bulbs. The white undertones of yellow and lime green can go either way.
- Plan out your accessories. They will add the finishing touch to your room and will reflect your personality. Never select an accessory to fill a space but to finish the space. When in doubt if it should be there, take it away and if there seems to be a hole there, put it back.
Congratulations! You have determined your décor style and scope of your design project. You have set your budget and have allowed yourself enough time. All that is left is to go shopping!
