Cleaning and Maintenance for Your Window Treatments
At Ross Howard Designs here in Dallas, we know that many of our customers are a little daunted by taking care of their new window treatment purchases. They usually are afraid that they’ll do something wrong and break their window treatment. However, it’s important to keep up with a regular cleaning routine so that your window fashions can keep their like-new appearance. That’s why we’re providing the tips below—you’ll see just how easy it can be to care for your Hunter Douglas window fashions.
Where to Begin With Blind Cleaning
Remember that, as you settle down to clean your treatment, some treatments are perfect for those who want to do it themselves; others, though, need a professional. For example, for blinds and shades, regular light dusting is perfect. For a deeper cleaning, gently vacuum the fabric with a clean brush attachment. Compressed air is a great way to clean out cellular shades.
A Deeper Washing for Your Shades
If you have aluminum or faux wood blinds, they can usually be immersed in your bathtub or sink (but keep the headrail out of the water because the mechanism isn’t designed to get wet). Use lukewarm water and a gentle detergent, and let your fingers gently move the liquid over the slats. Close the blind to rinse it off and tilt it again to let the water drain. Re-install the treatment while it’s still damp, keeping it fully lowered so it can dry completely.
If You Have a Stain
If you have a stain, you can spot-clean most shades and blinds using a soft cloth or sponge with lukewarm water and perhaps a very mild detergent. Be sure that you don’t rub the fabric, which can crease or damage it. Also, for very delicate fabrics, you should consult the professionals, who might recommend ultrasonic cleaning or injection/extraction cleaning right in your home.
