Designing with Area Rugs

Rugs are a wise investment in your home and quality rugs will last for years. Area rugs work in most any room, and are particularly useful in open floor plans. Large open spaces can sometimes create the illusion that your furniture is “floating.” A carefully placed rug will anchor your space and define the area.

When choosing a rug, select one that complements your décor, rather than matching colors or patterns exactly. Also make sure that your new rugs support the room’s traffic pattern and works with your furniture. There are basically three ways you can arrange furniture on your rug:

• All on: If your rug is large enough to place all of the furniture legs on top of it, do it that way for more luxurious feel. Just be sure to leave at least 12 to 18 inches of floor surface on all four sides of the rug’s borders.
• All off: In small rooms with smaller rugs, keep all legs off the rug. Don’t go too small with the rug, though, or it will look insignificant.
• Front on: When the sizing of both the room and the rug is just right, put just the front feet of your furniture on the rug. This will tie everything together and define the space.

All area rugs can be applied over any type of floor covering. If you’re installing new floors, an added design bonus is to inset the rug in your tile, wood, or marble floor so you have a flush floor throughout.
