Choosing Between Genuine and Faux Wood Blinds
Hunter Douglas creates numerous window fashion products using a variety of materials, from natural reeds and grasses to PVC and aluminum. At Ross Howard Designs, we’ve found that many of our customers have become curious about the differences between genuine wood and faux wood, and which option would be better for them. The short answer to the last part is: it depends. If you’re looking at genuine or faux wood window fashions, read on for the quick scoop on those two materials.
What You’ll Get With Genuine Wood Products
Hunter Douglas products such as Heritance® Hardwood Shutters and Parkland® Wood Blinds are made with genuine wood that will bring a one-of-a-kind look. For example, with the Heritance Handcrafted Series, several different finishing techniques help highlight the unique aspects of the wood, including dents, cracks, and knots, which makes the finished product look rustic yet elegant. With genuine wood, you can choose from numerous slat sizes and a variety of colors and stains to match your overall look. You’ll also find that genuine wood is lighter than faux wood (by about 50%), which makes these products easier to maneuver. Because of that light weight, genuine wood blinds can fit larger openings. However, although it has numerous benefits, genuine wood can warp in areas of high moisture, and it’s about 30 percent more expensive than its faux cousin.
What You’ll Get With Faux Wood Products
Hunter Douglas products such as EverWood® Alternative Wood Blinds, Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters, and NewStyle® Hybrid Shutters are made with faux wood. They are durable and affordable and tend to be resistant to high moisture and UV rays—they won’t crack, chip, peel, warp, or bow. These beauties will look just as good as the real thing, but they cost less; plus, they’re easy to clean. However, while it might seem like a great budgetary solution, faux wood might not be the right choice for your needs. It’s heavier than genuine wood, so not all faux wood products can be sized for larger window openings. Be sure to speak with a trained consultant to see if faux wood is right for you.
