Make Your Windows More Energy-Efficient

And now that we’re in the cooler winter months, it’s all too easy to spend a lot on energy. So it’s a great time to consider ways to make your windows more energy efficient. Read on for some tips!
Five Steps to Take
It’s not just during the winter—throughout the year, up to 50% of a home’s heating and cooling costs can be lost through the window. So here are some steps to take to prevent outside air from entering and inside air from escaping.
- Weather-strip your windows and doors
- Caulk your basement windows
- Lock your windows to be sure they’re shut as tightly as possible
- In the winter, make use of the sun’s rays by keeping your window treatments open during the day to allow the natural heat. Be sure close them at night so the heat doesn’t escape
- In the summer, close your treatments against those rays to help keep your house cool
Window Treatments Make a Difference
And if you don’t have window treatments—or if they’re old or nonfunctional—consider upgrading. Honeycomb shades (also called cellular blinds or shades) are one of the more popular window treatments used today. Having been around for over 30 years, they continue to offer superior privacy, insulation, and light control. When the shade is lowered, you can actually feel the cold or hot air disappear, because as air passes through the material, it is trapped in the honeycomb-shaped cells. This allows your room to stay comfortable.
