Your Role In the Design Consultation
During your first meeting with the designer, share what you love about each room. For example, if you love your fireplace, tell the designer and ask what suggestions they have to make it the focal point of the room. Based on their response, you will quickly see if you and the designer are on the same page. If you do have the same vision, tell the designer what you hate about the room. This can include how the room makes you feel, as well as the actual functionality, or lack thereof, in that room. Remember, your personal taste matters!
Let’s Talk Color
Whether you like cool neutrals, just a touch of color or a house full of color, your designer can help. Always be sure to let you designer know which colors and color families you like and dislike. After all, you’re the one who will be living with the results. If you’ve got a sample of a color you really love—whether it’s on a favorite vase, pillow, or dish—show your designer.
How You Use the Space
If you have special needs for a room—for example, wheelchair accessibility, allergies, vision issues—tell your designer. Also share how you use the room. For example, if you watch television in bed before falling asleep, that might impact furniture placement, technology access, and available space. Also let your designer know if a space is for everyday use or if it’s only for special occasions. All of that information will be important to the end result. The more information you share with your designer, the better your overall experience will be.
