Narrowing Down Window Treatment Options
There are so many styles, fabrics, operating systems, and looks to choose from, it can be hard to narrow down the options. At Ross Howard Designs in Dallas, we know how daunting the process can be for our customers. That’s why we offer the following steps to start so that, once you’re ready to speak with one of our trained consultants, they’ll be able to show you the products you want.
- Decide whether you want the window to be a focal point or not. If you put color on the window, it will be the focal point of the room, where your eye goes first. If you’d prefer accessories or art or a piece of furniture to be the eye-catching piece, use neutral colors and soft textures on the treatment so that it will blend in with the rest of the room.
- Do you need vertical or horizontal treatments? Horizontal window coverings work best on windows that are taller than they are wide, while vertical window coverings are most suitable for windows that are wider than they are tall. Remember that vertical treatments can’t totally disappear, they can go to one side or to both sides of the window. For many people who have pets and little kids, vertical is not a good option. Horizontal products can be raised, stacked on the window, or hidden under a valance. For privacy, pull them down; during the day, raise them to disappear or try a combination of both. If you prefer a horizontal blind or shade for sliding glass door, two window treatments could be mounted on one track. This allows the ability to have one shade down and the other up for easy access.
- Think about diffusing or deflecting light. If you’re light-sensitive, this is a very important point. Diffused light is soft without the intensity or glare of direct light. Choices for diffused light are Duette® Honeycomb Shades, Silhouette® Window Shadings, Luminette® Privacy Sheers, pleated and roller shades. Deflected light is harsh and can be hard on the aging eye. However, for some rooms, it might be the best choice. A few products that create deflected light are Provenance® Woven Wood Blinds, shutters, and both vertical and horizontal blinds
Doing your homework before you meet with a window treatment specialist will save you time and allow them to better serve you. And in the end, you should be able to find the perfect window treatment that not only finish your room beautifully but offer the functionality you need as well.
